“Being different and thinking differently make a person unforgettable. History does not remember the forgettable. It honors the unique minority the majority cannot forget.”
~Suzy Kassem
We are all sovereign beings having unique experiences in this walk of life and what makes us different from each other is one of our greatest gifts. Oftentimes people will look at being different as a burden because it sets them apart from the social standards of “normal”. Yet, what is normal? I have always felt different and even felt I didn’t fit in at times in my life. I wish I knew then what I have come to know now, as an empowered woman, that my differences are my greatest attributes and I fully embrace my differences and have even grown to love my uniqueness.
Unfortunately, we don’t learn to love and honor what sets us apart until we are older and wiser and frankly, just don’t care any longer what others think. What if we could learn to accept our differences and what makes us and others unique as being amazing at a young age and not just learn this but truly believe it. I think judgment and bullying would be far less and we would have a youth that’s more confident and more empowered.
Whether the differences are how we dress, what we believe, our race, ethnic origin, color, religion and creed, or sexual orientation. We have differences that make up our cultures, our values, our minds, and all our ways of being in the world. Our differences and diversity are what makes humanity so beautiful.
Learning to embrace and honor our differences and respecting others for theirs, is so beautiful and freeing. Making a conscious awareness of this takes time and effort but there are many ways you can do this. For me, honoring someone for their differences means I respect and celebrate that person. It’s about accepting and appreciating someone for who they are. I don’t have to agree with them on all issues, I don’t necessarily even have to like them, but I will honor them and fully embrace the concept of, “to each their own.”
Ways you can honor someone in all their differences and beautiful ways of being-
01. Pay a compliment
02. Treat others with respect
03. Be understanding
04. Be patient
05. Ask questions
06. Challenge assumptions
07. Overlook mistakes
08. Forgive
09. Show compassion
10. Celebrate accomplishments
11. Cheer someone on
12. Listen
13. Encourage
14. Learn from others
15. Help others
16. Find common ground
17. Appreciate your differences
18. Accept help
19. Be open
Open your heart, open your eyes, open your mind and put yourself in someone else’s shoes, as my dad would often say. This to me means, if you have lived that person's life, maybe your opinions and feelings would be different.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope this empowers you to embrace your differences and honor others for theirs.
“I think every person has their own identity and beauty. Everyone being different is what is really beautiful. If we were all the same, it would be boring.” ~Tila Tequila
